Stovetop Espresso Makers

Expresso Maker: stovetop vs pump vs steam (sub $100)?

I am looking to buy an expresso machine, budget is $100.

Now with this money I can buy a pump machine, steam driven machine or a stove top. It seems that the pump ones are almost always better than the steam driven ones. But given the budget constraints, I can only afford to get a very entry-level pump machine.
how are those stove-top espresso makers?
Can I steam/frost milk w. a stovetop moka pot?

Are the cheaper (sub $100) pump driven machines generally really bad in durability?

not sure how prepared you are to entertain discussion on this point, but do you know it is possible to enjoy truly great coffee that is not produced by the espresso process & is pretty much within anyones budget. You see the problem is the term ‘espresso’ has this cache about it & people flock to it. Dont get me wrong, I love espresso (LondiniumEspresso.com is my business) but i just think that buying a sub USD100 machine might leave you disappointed. i mean it wont make espresso like the stonking great espresso machine at your local specialist cafe. So, if you have an open mind what i am proposing is…

Search for ‘Swissgold coffee filter’ on the web (you want the KF300 model for a single cup). They are affordable & if you look after it you will basically have it forever. Sure we sell them, but buy it off whoever you choose. Then find yourself an entry level burr grinder for USD30 or thereabouts. Sure some people call these ‘fake’ burr grinders which they kind of are, but it will work perfectly well as long as you aren’t trying to produce espresso. I guess the key point i am trying to make here is that it is all about sourcing great, freshly roasted coffee beans, then being able to grind them only when you want a cup of coffee (ground coffee becomes noticably stale after 30minutes!!!). Then find yourself a great local coffee roaster. Just a thought. If you want any more help we are happy to assist. good luck with whatever way you decide to go. the Swissgold filter will produce fantastic coffee if you make the effort to source some great freshly roasted beans from you local specialist roaster.
